Toyota Hilux 1979 is a series of compact pickups manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation. Under this name this car is known in most countries of the world.
The pickup Toyota Hilux first appeared in Japan in 1967 and in Europe it was introduced in late 2005. Since the end of the seventies it was sold more than 12 million times all over the world.
The third generation Toyota Hilux 1979 (RN30) was introduced in August 1978. And in January 1979, the first 4WD (all-wheel drive) Hilux appeared. Since then Hilux began to use an automatic transmission and a double passenger cabin (Crew cab). The engine 18R was installed on the all-wheel drive versions.
Pick-ups of the third generation were prodused before July 1983, but some rear-wheel drive versions continued to be produced in parallel with the next-generation cars.
The body of the car underwent a redesign, which includes more simple body shapes and single round headlights of the head light. On the Toyota Hilux 4WD in front mounted a bridge on the spring suspension. In the all-wheel drive system, the gearbox transmission RF1A was used.
The first generation of Toyota Hilux (1968-1972)
The production of Hilux was started in March 1968. It was a short-wheelbase pickup (RN10) with a 4-cylinder petrol engine of 1.5 liters (74 hp). It accelerate the car to a maximum of 130 km / h. In February 1971 the engine was increased to 1.6 liters. Along with the production of a short-haul pickup, in April 1969 a version with a long wheelbase (2.3 m) was produced. In the North American market this machine appeared only in 1972.
The Hilux pick-up truck was designed and assembled at Hino Motors plants. Hino Motors is a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation. Despite its name, it wasn’t possible to call this car “very luxurious” (very luxurious, abbreviated hilux). The Japanese ideas of a luxury car of that time was very different from the American one, so the name Hilux never got accustomed at the North American market.
Hilux of the first generation was a rear-wheel-drive frame car, with a longitudinally located engine. Transmission was 4-speed manual.
The second generation (1972-1978)
The second generation of Toyota Hilux (RN20) was launched in May 1972. Along with the renewed appearance buyers saw a more comfortable interior.
In 1975, Hilux was seriously redesigned. The body of the car has become larger. Also the list of additional equipment in the base set has significantly increased. A manual 5-speed gearbox was optional. By the end of 1975, in the North American market, the name “Hilux” was completely replaced by “Truck”.
Reputation
Hilux has acquired the reputation of an exceptionally durable and reliable car. With regular maintenance, the mileage of this car often exceeds 500,000 km.
Hilux is also known because the insurgents and irregular armed forces use it as improvised combat vehicles during military conflicts in third world countries. The war between Libya and Chad is often called the “Toyota’s War” because the army of Chad used the Toyota Hilux equipped with weapons as a kind of car cavalry.
The police of Singapore, Pakistan, Georgia use Hilux as a patrol car.
It is often called “unbreakable”. It get this name after the BBC’s Top Gear show, in which 1988 Hilux with a diesel engine and 305,775 kilometers of run was subjected to all sorts of not-so-common tests. Hilux went up the stairs, touched the building, crashed into a tree, kept completely submerged in the sea for four hours, drove through a live garden hedge. It was beaten with a pear for buildings demolishing, was on fire, and finally it was placed on the roof of a 73-meter residential building intended for demolition, with which it collapsed down after a controlled explosion.
And although after all this Hilux got a lot of very serious damage, it did not lose the ability to move independently and after a small repair using only standard tools that will always be found in the usual toolbox (and no additional spare parts!) it was able to get to the studio Top Gear.
We are really happy to present you Toyota Hilux 1979.
