Subaru BRZ 2003 was created on the modified chassis of Subaru Impreza. It has a front-engine arrangement and a saloon 2 + 2. Subaru BRZ became the result of cooperation between Subaru and Toyota. Thanks to this the model received a twin Toyota GT86 (in the American market Scion FR-S). Also, it has a rather original design of some units and assemblies.
When developing the power unit Subaru BRZ 2003 for the basis was taken Subaru FB20 engine. Engineers combined this engine with a proprietary Toyota combined injection system D-4S. Due to this they get 200 hp. at a maximum torque of 205 Nm. The choice of gearbox was also difficult. As a result Subaru BRZ received 2 variants – 6-speed mechanics and 6-speed automatic gearbox.
In addition, Subaru BRZ 2003 is equipped with rear-drive transmission with a self-locking differential. The car has a center of gravity which is record low in this class. It is located at an altitude of 460 mm and complements the excellent weight distribution along the axes (53:47) and a small mass of the car (1180 kg). The weight of the Subaru BRZ was reduced due to the use of aluminum parts.
